- Grain-free diets are being blamed for the recent spike in DCM in dogs, but to put the blame entirely on these specific types of diets would be simplifying as well as missing the underlying issue.
- There is likely a “perfect storm” of genetic predisposition, a GI microbiota alteration or difference, and problematic pet food formulation/processing.
- In the early to mid-2000s there was a similar scare with Newfoundlands and a few other uncommon DCM breeds fed lamb and rice bran diets.
- These diets were low in protein, were not methionine/taurine supplemented (methionine and cysteine are precursors for taurine synthesis in dogs), were high in insoluble and soluble fiber and contained large amounts of ash.
- This is very similar to what is going on today, except the diets being talked about are grain-free.
- Common factors in implicated kibble diets:
- Protein is below 26% as fed or less than 65g per 1,000 kcal.
- No Wynwood Dog Food Diets are at or below 65g/1,000kcal
The protein is a mix of meat and plant protein.
Companies are not checking the specific amino acid content or the quality of those amino acids in the diet.
High ash content.
- This means more bone-related protein in the diet, which is a poor source of protein.
- Ash content is not typically found on dog food labels.
- All Wynwood Dog Food diets have very low ash content due to proteins we source. Ash levels can be found in our Diet Analysis Guidebook.
- Because methionine and cysteine are sulfur-containing amino acids, they can become oxidized during processing which will make their availability lower than what the manufacturer is expecting.
High levels of insoluble and soluble fibers derived from peas, beans and/or legumes.
- Soluble fiber increases the bacteria in the GI tract that may be consuming taurine, which could be causing less reabsorption in the small intestine.
- There may be an unknown unique interaction in the pet food causing a loss of taurine absorption.
For many years, grain-free carbohydrate sources have been used safely, particularly in novel protein diets.
- It is critical pet foods are formulated by qualified veterinary nutritionists.
- All Wynwood Dog Food diets are formulated by Dr. Justin Shmalberg, DVM, DACVN
No, your dog most likely does not need a low protein diet if they have kidney disease.
There is a paradigm shift that is happening with respect to protein and renal disease, in both cats and dogs. There was never any evidence protein caused the progression of renal disease (tubulointerstitial disease) as it does in rodents and potentially in humans. The studies that were performed on phosphorus restriction using normal commercial diets were always protein restricted due to manufacturing constraints from the large pet food manufacturers. Because the large pet manufacturers tend to use meat meals (protein with high bone/ash content) they are unable to lower phosphorus content without lowering protein content, as phosphorus is found in bone. Therefore, there was a dramatic linear relationship between phosphorus content and the protein content. When experimental studies were performed as early as the 1980s assessing dietary phosphorus and protein independently, it was found that phosphorus was the only determinant of progression (due to renal secondary hyperparathyroidism). We recognize, more noticeably in cats, that in end stage kidney disease, loss of muscle / lean mass occurs fairly profoundly. Wynwood Dog Food’s renal diets are high in lean protein, allowing us to keep phosphorus at or below the amounts in commonly prescribed therapeutic commercial renal diets. This increases palatability, seems to preserve lean body mass and allows us to use phosphorus binders more sparingly.
Dog Food: Transitioning, Feeding, Storing
Our frozen meals can be stored in the freezer for up to 12 months. Once opened, our products should be consumed within a 5 days.
To safely thaw our frozen meals, we recommend defrosting them in the refrigerator or in cold water. We do not recommend cutting or trying to seperate the food while frozen.
The amount of food your dog requires depends on their age, weight, activity level, and overall health. We recommend consulting with a veterinarian to determine your dog's ideal weight and using that number in our Online Feeding Calculator or our Starter Box form.
Yes! Our food is truly fresh and free of preservatives, so it's important to treat it like real food. Keep it at a safe temperature in a refrigerator or freezer. Your box will also include an easy guide on how to store and feed the food properly.
You can serve it directly from the fridge or add a touch of hot water if your dog prefers warm food.
Gradually increase the amount of new food over a period of seven to ten days, starting with a small amount of the new food mixed with their old food. If your dog experiences any digestive issues, slow down the transition. Remember that every dog is unique and may require a more extended or even shorter transition period. Visit our How to Feed Fresh page for more details.
The frequency of feeding your dog depends on a variety of factors, including their age, size, activity level, and health status. Generally, adult dogs can be fed once or twice a day, while puppies and senior dogs may require more frequent meals. It's important to follow the feeding guidelines provided on your dog food package and to monitor your dog's weight and body condition regularly to ensure they are getting the right amount of food. Additionally, it's recommended to avoid feeding your dog right before or after exercising to prevent digestive issues. If you have any concerns about your dog's feeding schedule, it's always best to consult with your veterinarian.
Yes, you can mix our food with your dog's current diet. However, keep in mind that if you're transitioning your dog to a new diet, it's important to do it gradually over the course of a week or two to avoid digestive upset. Additionally, while it's optimal to provide a variety of diets or ingredients, our diets are formulated for long-term daily feeding, so you can choose to stick with just a single diet if you prefer.
Yes, our food can be refrozen, but please be aware that the recommended storage time is reduced to 3-4 days instead of the original 5 days. Additionally, the food should be consumed within 3 months after being refrozen. The nutritional integrity of the product remains intact even after being refrozen.
Yes, you can certainly feed your dog a variety of diets. It's important to note that introducing new diets or ingredients that your dog hasn't had before may cause an upset stomach, so it's crucial to gradually introduce any new food over the course of a few days to a week to avoid digestive upset. Additionally, feeding a variety of diets can help provide your dog with a diverse range of nutrients and prevent them from getting bored with their food.
