Fiber: Your Dog's Dietary Ally

For years, dietary fiber was dismissed as mere "filler" in canine nutrition. Many dog owners understand the need for meat and proteins in their dog’s dish but may fail to recognize the myriad of health benefits that fiber provides. As modern pet nutrition evolves, science continues to highlight that fiber is a crucial ally for your dog’s health. Far from a “filler” or empty ingredient, fiber is a complex carbohydrate that passes through the stomach and small intestine intact and delivers multiple beneficial effects to the lower gastrointestinal tract.1

Cultivating Microbiome Diversity

The canine gut hosts trillions of microbes that influence everything from digestion to immune function. Fiber acts as a vital prebiotic, feeding these beneficial bacteria. When dogs consume fermentable fibers, friendly microbes digest them and produce beneficial metabolites that impact the gut directly as well as the rest of the body indirectly.2  

Fermentation of fibers produces the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) acetate, propionate, and butyrate. Butyrate serves as the primary energy source for cells lining the colon. Furthermore, SCFAs can lower the intestinal pH, creating an acidic environment that supports beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus while repelling pathogens.

A peer-reviewed study published in BMC Veterinary Research (2022) established that a fiber-supplemented diet significantly expanded gut fermentation. This shift effectively suppressed proteolytic putrefaction—the breakdown of protein that yields potentially harmful toxic metabolites.3

Sculpting Superior Stool Quality

Fiber is a universal bowel regulator because it simultaneously prevents constipation and controls diarrhea. As Nutritionist, we will say fiber can help “normalize” stool quality and works for both firming up looser stool as well softening stools that are too firm. This duality is often achieved in pet foods using different types of fibers blended together:

  • Insoluble Fiber: Acts like a sponge, drawing moisture into the colon to bulk up fecal matter. This bulking action can soften small, firm stool while also pressing against the colonic walls during passage, stimulating natural contractions that keep waste moving regularly.

  • Soluble Fiber: Dissolves in water to create a soothing gel that slows down transit time, absorbs excess water and binds up loose, watery stools.

A 2024 study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) evaluated dogs with chronic gastrointestinal signs. Researchers found that increasing dietary fiber improved stool consistency and clinical symptoms in 88% of the participating dogs, shifting them to a status of clinically insignificant disease.4 This stool bulking action is often tried for mechanic benefit of supporting anal gland function;  it exerts natural pressure on the anal glands during defecation, promoting routine expression while also supporting normal anal gland microflora.

In commercial dry or canned pet foods, beet pulp (70% insoluble/ 30% soluble) remains an industry favorite because its moderate fermentability offers an optimal balance of SCFA production and solid stool structure.5 Emerging, sustainable crops like miscanthus grass are increasingly used alongside or in place of plant cell wall-derived cellulose to effectively dilute calories for weight management without degrading kibble quality.6

For fresh commercial diets or owners preparing homemade formulations, adding whole foods with fibers such as pureed pumpkin, sweet potatoes or lightly steamed mixed vegetables or green vegetables can supply gentle roughage from natural sources. Supplements also can be added such as psyllium husk or powdered cellulose which offer targeted support for loose bowels or increased meal satiety (satisfaction). Never alter a homemade recipe unless you speak first to your primary care veterinarian or your Veterinary Nutritionist who has formulated your recipe.

New Labels Coming Soon

New regulatory updates from AAFCO are replacing traditional "Crude Fiber" guarantees with "Total Dietary Fiber" (TDF) on pet food labels, offering a more transparent view of both soluble and insoluble fiber content. This shift ensures consumers can identify the full spectrum of prebiotics and beneficial fibers, providing a better understanding of the content within the pet food. Ultimately, fiber should never be feared as a cheap filler. When integrated correctly, it can be a foundational pillar of canine wellness that ensures predictable, healthy digestion and can help support a resilient microbiome. New nutrition labels will make evaluating dietary fiber even easier and help us as veterinarians select best diets for our pet patients.
